A guitarrist who uses fretless electric instrument
and 12 strings, and mostly the skill to increase the timbric capacity
through an aware use of electronic ability, the french Franck Vigroux
is one of the young musicians who can choose different contexts,
without being involved in the role of the virtuoso guitar player.
His chords offer the occasion to travel in the non-formal fields,
beside concrete music and improvvisation (but not only this). His
groups join different non orthodox musicians from the South France:
a Duo with Ned Evett, a quartet, Könntest,
with Michel Blanc, Stephane Trepp and Cecile Rives, and a large
ensemble with Steve Lawson e Jérome Cury.
Your music seems to move in
different perspectives inside collective improvisation and open
form through different relationships between sounds and voices.
Do you think this can be a good key to represent your work?
Not really, for me each project is different, I try
new instrumentations any time I record something new. I am as child
who likes to "play". About improvisation I consider that
it's an half of my work, no more. I like particularly the interaction
between both improvised and written music. Most of the Könntest
music is semi-written, the rhythm and drums parts are written, structure
too, approximatively, or very precisely. It's only once we control
these parameters, then we can start to improvise. And there is still
a lot of place for it.
Also my experiences on improvisation with an orchestra are always
exciting but it's never totally "free": there is a "road
map" which musicians are supposed to respect while I try, as
much as possible, to conduct this large group of musicians.
Guitar is not the central item, but one of the
different elements of your music. How do you compose then?
Simply, a record is a not a concert. I play a lot
of times, too many probably. And I don't like so much guitar timbre,
but it's my instrument and it's too late to change. I have no particular
secret to compose, things come or not. Actually I am working on
a future records made of "voices collages" and string
quartet. It's pretty challenging for me to write music without one
guitar notes. This music is a mix of electronic, musique concrete,
written string quartet and improvised trombone.
Is it a part of the trilogy you called
Lilas? By the way, what is inspired to?
By unrooted and separated people, and by this world
always self destroying. That could be also the story of two people
during a war, it can be 60 years ago, now or later...
Producing, promoting, organizing events, do you
think this could be the future for musicians without big structures
like records industry?
The only thing I know is that Art will be probably
not a priority for western goverments in the next decade. I have
the chance to work exclusively in the music, teaching and promoting
etc... But, of course, I would prefer only to work on my own music!
That's life and at least I am free to create what I want, even if
it's very difficult to do everything by yourself.
How much Internet has determinated this development
for you?
Every body knows that Internet music sales are still
very low, that's seems very logic, because to buy a object is to
hand it first. But internet allow so much connections between passionate
people. That's very important for those who make what you call "altremusiche".
Which are you plans for future?
In the very close future the release of three new
albums: the first is an acoustic trio with Cecile Rives (voice)
and Noël Akchote (guitar) that will be release on my Label
(D'Autres Cordes, www.digitrucstudio.com). Next are the untitled
electronic/string quartet works and a duo with Michel Blanc (drums)
plus guests. Also the Evett/Vigroux duo will tour in the US in february
to present our album (Empty Beach records/Burnside Records). I should
be in Italy in july for the "Seichitarresole festival",
maybe a tour will follow there.
